A Weekend of Mental Health Drop-In Chats
Promote and destigmatize mental health awareness by hosting a drop-in space that will start conversations surrounding mental health with members of the community. Many people do not have access to adequate mental health support - we must break this cycle by providing people with the opportunity to try out mental health services!
How might this help your community?
Many underserved communities do not have access to mental health resources. Having a drop-in space will allow people from these communities to learn more about mental health and talk to others about their struggles.
It will allow people to get connected to better mental health resources, validate their mental health concerns, and receive messages of hope from facilitators who can relate to their mental health journeys.
Mental health is still a taboo topic of discussion in most families. There may be people within the community who want to try out mental health services before committing to a therapist or medical professional.
TIPS FOR WHEN & WHERE
At the local library
On a weekend during the summer
Suggested Action Plan
Find and recruit individuals who are qualified to talk about mental health.
Let these individuals know the times the event will be held and that it is a volunteer opportunity.
Contact a library with a study room that can be rented for the weekend. Book a date.
Create, print, and distribute flyers for the event.
Arrive early at the event space and set it up for the drop-in. There should be separate spaces and desks for different people to have different conversations at the same time.
At the end of the weekend, clean up the space with the volunteers.
